Fernando Gapasin, president of the Central Oregon Labor Council, and Michael Funke, former organizer with Central Oregon Jobs with Justice, lead chorus of "Solidarity, Forever" at May 12, 2007 Solidarity Rally for Bend Area Transit (BAT) workers who have joined Amalgamated Transit Union Local 757. The rally forced Paratransit Services, the contractor that runs bus service for Bend, to recognize the union and reinstatement (with full back pay) a union leader who was fired for union activities.

Jobs with Justice is about action!

Fighting for economic and social justice is the core of much of the work of Central Oregon Jobs with Justice. Our efforts have yielded exciting labor-community collaborations:

Provided leadership, resources, and people power to Our Community First’s successful campaign to stop a Wal-Mart supercenter in Bend and organized a Wal-Mart Workers Speak Out tour stop in Bend with the International Labor Rights Fund.

Helped Head Start workers force management into mediation, which led to their first union contract.

Joined with Human Dignity Coalition, PFLAG, Basic Rights Oregon and other allies to mobilize broad community support for the Equal Rights Ordinance that protects against discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodation on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.  The Bend City Council unanimously adopted the anti-discrimination law.

Provided leadership to create a working advocacy group for immigrants with Latinos sin Fronteras, Latino Community Association, CAUSA, and the Central Oregon Labor Council.

Organized a solidarity rally for the transit workers, which led to employer recognition of ATU Local 757 and reinstatement of a bus driver fired for union activities.

Led mobile home park tenants, organized Tenants United for Fairness (TUFF) and mobilized support for a unique Bend city ordinance that protects tenants from forced evictions.

Joined OSEA members and parents in resisting the privatization of school bus driver jobs in the Fort Rock School District.

Worked with the Central Oregon Coalition for Access in their campaign for a fully-accessible public transit system in Bend.

Helped non-union Mt. Bachelor employees win wage increases and worked with Oregon’s Bureau of Labor and Industries (BOLI) to insure that all the ski resort workers get legally required rest and lunch breaks that management had previously denied them.

Initiated or participated in Global Justice and Fair Trade Panel, JwJ Diversity Conference workshop, Living Wage conference, Pride Day, Labor Day Picnic, Central Oregon Coalition Against Privatization, Envision Oregon, KPOV community radio, Bend’s Vision 2030 project and more.

Organizing and Collective Bargaining Rights
Workers' rights are under attack. Over the past nineteen years, Jobs with Justice coalitions have proven again and again that when enough of us stand together, we all start winning.

Health Care for All
Health care costs are soaring and the system is out of control. The widespread failure of the private sector to provide essential services for working families means that the time is increasingly ripe for a national health care reform movement.

Immigrant Rights
Historically, U.S. and foreign workers have often been pitted against each other, and racism and immigrant bashing have divided workers domestically to the advantage of corporations. Now, Jobs with Justice, along with many others, is bridging the gap between the labor movement and immigrant rights groups as we explore strategies to fight for better living and working conditions for all workers, regardless of their legal status.

Global Justice
It is clear that domestic struggles for workers’ rights are inextricably linked to international economic activity and the respect for workers’ rights abroad. JwJ is engaged in a variety of projects to fight for fairness in the global economy.

Economic Development
JwJ coalitions fight for people’s power against corporations; fighting to ensure that community members have a say in what kind of development happens in their neighborhood; fighting for accountable economic development; fighting for not just jobs, but Jobs with Justice.

Corporate Accountability
Jobs with Justice is working to ensure that corporate power is balanced by the human needs of working families and our communities. Corporate power unchecked creates economic tyranny and threatens the core of democracy.
